August comes from the Latin word “Augustus,” which has to do with increasing. The word “august” is also an adjective which means majestic or marked by dignity. Certainly the month August is increasingly hot, and deserves respect, especially if you’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors.
We often think of August as the month that school starts, the last vacation fling, the last month of true summer, and the hottest month of the year. August can have the feel of an ending as the year slides out of the carefree days of summer and into serious, “let’s get back to business” fall.
So, let’s pause to pay our respects to August. Here’s a list of my favorite August things:
- the smell of new mown grass
- the heat, like the warm sweaty hand of a playmate on your skin
- Sandy beaches under clear blue skies
- The smell of coconut oil
- The swishing noise that sprinklers make
- The droning of cicadas
- Big fat bumblebees, buzzing in the late summer blooms
- Giant yellow sunflowers
- Watermelon, cool and crisp, at a picnic
- Checkered tablecloths
- Iced lemonade in a glass pitcher
- Bins of bright colored school supplies
- The stippled light and shadow under shade trees in the afternoons
What are your favorite August things?

I thought I was the only person whose favorite season was the Fall! I love fall colors, watching the leaves change and that crispness that starts to show up in the air. Apple picking, wearing sweaters and making apple or pumpkin pies… yum. I could live in Fall weather all year round.
My favorite August thing is the preparation it offers for the fall. I love the fall; it is my favorite season. August brings me preseason football in preparation for the start of the football season in September. It brings back-to-school sales in preparation for the beginning of another school year. And a new line of warm, cozy clothes displayed in stores in preparation of the cooler weather. Just as most do, I too feel sorry to see summer come to an end but I do welcome the fall. :)
